~ Dave Ramsey.

Dave recently said this on his nationally-syndicated talk radio show to a man named Richard who called in from Orlando Florida asking advice on developing a website for his business and how much money he should spend on it.  If you don’t know who Dave Ramsey is, essentially, he is a financial advisor who has a written about fifteen books on financial management (several of which are New York Times Best-Sellers) and has a radio show that people call into with all kinds of financial and life questions in which he advises them on what to do.  He has built a veritable financial empire off of helping people make sound financial decisions, become debt free, plan for the future, and become millionaires.

One thing that Dave has going for him is that he has that instant ‘trust factor’. If you haven’t read my post on trust and salesmanship, you can read it here.  I haven’t yet met him, but I’m sure (based upon listening to his radio show nearly every day, reading his books, and going through FPU) he can only be telling the truth about everything he does and teaches based upon the fanfare he receives and how effective his teaching has been in my life.

I completely agree with Dave, if you don’t have a website for your business… what are you thinking?  I’m not going to bother digging up the stats that print and traditional-media are dying out, because that should go without saying…. But seriously, if you don’t have a website, what are you thinking?  Whether you’ve been in business for two minutes, two years, or two decades, you need a website!

According to Dave having a website that is, “… broken or it’s thrown together or it’s poorly done [is a] huge problem.”  But really, why do we need Dave Ramsey to tell us that having a crappy website is a huge problem?  Shouldn’t this be a given?  When do you enjoy visiting a website that looks like a casino floor, or that looks like something someone did back in 1991?

Don’t ask how cheaply you can get your site done, or how little you can spend on marketing.  Those may be good questions, but first you need to ask what you should do to be successful online.  First determine what you need to do to achieve success for your business, then figure out the best ways to go about doing those things.  If you go buying the cheapest stuff you possibly could (i.e. websites), it would be like you living your whole life eating off the dollar menu at a fast-food chain, then wondering why you are obese and have heart disease, or buying $100 cars off of Craigslist and wondering why they always break down.
