Directory Listing Are No Longer Effective

Online phone directories such as Yellow book, Dex, Comcast, local.com, qwest and AT&T, to name just a few all offer premium listings within their online directories, but is it worth the cost? Based on our analysis of client website analytics, our answer is no. It’s important to be able to track every visitor to your website, and we do so for our clients. I have yet to see enough traffic from any directory sites that would warrant paying the smallest premium listing. The bottom line is, when most people search for products or services online they do so using Google, Bing and Yahoo.
To be successful in marketing today your site needs to be seen by people that are searching for your products or services, which means your sites needs to be on page one of Google, Yahoo and Bing. The money that was once spent on yellow page listings needs to now be directed to SEO and SEM. Search engine marketing offers the highest ROI for your advertising dollar today.

The question is whether or not the low ranking backlink that might be gained from a directory submission is worth a monthly rate. Since little to no leads or sales are generated from directory listings (for the most part), the ROI on directory listings are poor. Thus, money should be spent elsewhere to increase search engine rankings.
