Are you thirsty?

Just think about it! When I was a kid, I put together a Lemonade stand to try and make some extra cash in between cutting lawns in the summer time.  My thought was this; I would take my profits after gas, spark plugs, a cold Dr Pepper and Little Debbie and invest in a lemonade stand. I was strategically going to position the stand near an intersection that had a lot of traffic. My marketing strategy was simple; its hot people have got to be thirsty, so I will sell lemonade!  So here you go, this is the cost to do business:

  • A homemade sign (Advertising) – $5.00
  • Lemonade (Bulk) –  $6.50
  • Water – Free 
  • Cups – $3.00
  • Chair / Table / Stand – Hand built out of scrap wood  (Free) other than my time
  • MARKETING STRATEGY – PRICELESS

So as you can see we all have ideas, but what matters most?  Is your idea (product) in front of the right targeted market? Just as I strategically positioned my lemonade stand where significant traffic was, I also offered a product that people wanted. This is called inbound marketing. Of course I didn’t realize this, I just sat back and watched the traffic flow by; man I was selling some Lemonade!  It was pretty cool and a nice break from cutting lawns in the scorching 100 degree heat. 

That year and many years after, I turned a little profit at that intersection.  So I ask you, how did my targeted market know what I was selling? Was I selling anything at all? Was what I was selling convertible? You see, my homemade sign for which I wrote the following “Get it while its cold, Lemonade of course” was generating great Return on Investment (ROI). Just as a little side note, I had to add the “Lemonade of course” due to being asked on several occasions if I had any Budweiser behind the stand? That sure was funny!  I was 12 years old why would I be selling beer?
