The effect of good backgrounds in web design

With the advent of the wide screen computer monitors, the use of eye catching backgrounds to fill the extra screen space has become more and more important. While some web design layouts are elastic (a design that stretches the full width of the screen) and don’t need a background, most web design layouts are still fixed. A fixed design locks the width of a design which allows users with smaller screens to see the full layout.

So many websites have boring, flat, one color backgrounds, or cheesy looking images as backgrounds. The quality of your background greatly increases the overall presentation of your website. I like to compare it to real-estate,  where the content of the website is considered the home, and the background is considered the neighborhood. The nicer the neighborhood, the higher the value of the home.
